Hillsborough is a small town with a lot of history. The downtown historic district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Over 100 homes, churches and other buildings from the late 18th and 19th century have been preserved. Tours of many historical homes and gardens are given.Many artists and writers call this town home. The Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area is close by. Its quaint downtown hosts great shops and restaurants. Annually barbecue lovers come to experience Hog Day. There are a number of horse riding facilities in the surrounding countryside. The Eno River State Park is nearby with great opportunities for hiking and enjoying the beautiful scenery.
